Happy birthday to me!

I didn't plan anything in particular for my birthday, but had a pleasant day of doing what I wanted (shoe horned in around work, of course).

I started off the day with breakfast at IHOP, or International House of Pancakes, as I like to call it.  I had a coupon for a free stack of pancakes, but invited David to come along and he treated me to the hot chocolate, even offering me to order the Lumberjack Special and forget the birthday pancakes.  The pancakes were great and the hot chocolate was nicely piled with whipped cream and the waiter brought me a second one as a birthday bonus.

I had three books to return to the library, so that was next.  Yes, I'm a geek; I like to read Consumer Reports, so I always read it in the library.  I read the whole September issue, then checked out a couple of books for Conor.

The library is in the same complex as a Goodwill thrift store, so I stopped in for a quick look in my favorite departments (housewares, linens, children's clothing) and spent a grand total of $1.79 for a new canning jar and a pair of shorts for my grandson.

What do you notice about this breakfast of mine?

Here it is:

Does it look SWEET?

A couple of weeks ago I was watching Good Morning America and Katie Couric was on talking about her new documentary movie which talks about the evils of sugars, as I understand it.  I don't think sugar is evil, but I have been working to reduce it in my diet and that of my family.  Katie Couric invited viewers to join her in a ten day "sugar fast" starting the next Monday and I decided to do it.  No sugar, no artificial sweeteners.

This is what I found:  there is sugar in a lot of things I like to eat.  I didn't go hard-core and scrutinize every.single.label for sugars, but if something obviously had sugar in it, such as cold breakfast cereal or commercial yogurt, it was off my menu.  No desserts, no adding a sprinkle of sugar to my oatmeal, or jam to my peanut butter sandwich.  It was quite an adjustment.

This is what changed:  I ate more carbs and fat than I usually do.  I substituted a bowl of muesli (minus the chocolate chips I love) for a bowl of ice cream.  Instead of a drizzle of syrup on my waffle, I spread on some butter.  No sugar on hot five-grain cereal?  Who cares when you can pour a bit of cream over it instead?

What didn't change:  I still feel the same.  I can't say eliminating sugar magically made my back pain go away or made my hair thick and luxurious.  However, got some new ideas for expanding my diet and how to eat things with less sugar.

So for breakfast today I'm having a chocolate chocolate chunk cookie Sophia made last night, a donut hole she bought in a package two days ago and saved one for me, and a marshmallow crispy treat I made from a Pioneer Woman recipe and saved in the freezer, waiting for the ten day fast to be completed.

You'd do the same, right?

I tried out a new pair of shoes today . . .

. . . and not the summer sandals I so deperately need!  Here they are:

Pretty awesome, right?

Okay, okay, there is something special about these shoes.  Here is the bottom of one:

Today was my first tap dance lesson.  I've wanted to try it most of my life and I finally did it.  I'll be doing a routine like this any time now . . . .

Eyes are a big topic of conversation around my house

Last week Bill had an operation on his bad eye and since eye surgery is major surgery, we've been talking about it alot, and by extension, eyes in general.

He wanted to see what his eye looked like after the operation, so he had me take a picture of it.  That way he could take a close look at it.  I took a picture of my eye too.
I have to say I think the color and texture of my iris is really beautiful.  There.  I've said it.  I think part of my body is beautiful.

In honor of David and Alicia's wedding a year ago . . .

. . . some pictures Bill and I snapped of ourselves while we were waiting for them at the temple.

I think we're looking pretty . . . old.  Haha, you thought I was going to say just "pretty," didn't you?  I'm posting these anyway because in a few years I'll look back and wish I looked so young and beautiful. :-)

My new avatar

My new job asked for an updated picture for their website, along with a short introductory video.
Here is the photo. My area manager likes it, so I'm satisfied. The video was to be a 1 minute introductory video and I didn't want it to be me staring at the webcam, so I asked a teenager in my ward who has video experience to help me. We went to a desert area nearby and shot it as I walked through the winter desert landscape. I'm very pleased with it as well.

Almost like trying on a bathing suit

Yes, trying on jeans, even the ones that are supposed to fit and flatter and slim every woman.[ahem...baloney...cough]

Dear Niece got a nice pair of Gloria Vanderbilt jeans at Costco and I liked them, so I went looking for some today.  In addition I needed to buy a pair for someone whose name was on the "Angel Tree" at church, same size as mine, so pretty easy.  Oh yeah, except all the jeans like dn's were sold out and all Costco had were big woman sizes and colored jeans.  Won't work for me this time.

My next stop was Walmart because I wanted to try on some Lee jeans that are advertised to flatter.  One pair was far from flattering, and in fact highlighted all my worst flaws.  Another pair the same size from Levi's I was barely able to get up my legs and the thought of zipping them was laughable.  Gotta love women's sizing in the USA.

I went back to the display again and found a pair of Lee Classic jeans.  I had thoughts of Mom Jeans, but the waist wasn't THAT high and the legs weren't tapered. ;-)  They gave me a good-enough fit, so I bought them.  Since the Angel Tree recipient is 15 years old, I got the first pair that didn't flatter me, because the cut was a more youthful cut and I figured she'd rather have that style.  Plus I don't know who she is and so I don't know what her figure shape is.

So two stores and three try-ons and I have a new pair of jeans.  It will probably be at least two years before I have to do that again.

PTA--for the good of our children

Tonight was the first PTA meeting of the school year and I'm on the board this year as the secretary.  It's great because that means I have to really pay attention to every single thing that is said!

The PTA raises money for music lessons, to give money to the teachers for their classroom budget, to provide family fun nights, to put on a carnival or two, and lots more.  The focus is on our children and families.  Could it be any better?
